Retrieval of materials for reading room use

Ordinarily, materials requested for use can be paged within minutes upon completion of appropriate call slips. You may receive up to 5 books, serial volumes, newspaper packages, or microfilm reels, or 4 manuscript collection boxes, per paging.

Duplication

IHRC materials, unless restricted, may be either photocopied or digitally reproduced; procedures and regulations for each are delineated in the corresponding request forms for these services. Also, most microfilm reels for which the IHRC holds master negatives can be duplicated for purchase. Please note: No personal scanners or other duplicating devices are allowed in the reading room. All duplication services will be performed by the IHRC staff only. Prepayment is required for all duplication requests received via phone, fax, mail or email. Please contact one of our collections staff for billing information.

Computer Searching

IHRC manuscript collections are cataloged on microcomputer, facilitating subject searching of this material. Also, the University Libraries' online catalog, MNCAT, can be consulted in the reading room. The curatorial staff will assist with use of these databases.

Microfilm Equipment

Two microfilm reader-printers, are available for patron use. Written procedures for using this equipment are posted near the machines. In addition, curatorial staff will assist in orienting you to these procedures.

Interlibrary Loan

It is often possible for the IHRC to receive materials from other libraries via interlibrary loan. Please notify the curator if you wish to make such arrangements. Note that this generally requires considerable time between the date of request and the actual receipt of materials. The IHRC can also loan to participating ILL institutions many of its materials held on microfilm as well as inventories to manuscript collections.

Use of University Libraries

You are welcome to visit Wilson Library and Walter Library. In addition, the IHRC can arrange borrowing privileges with these facilities for non-University affiliated researchers.

Preferred Format for Citation/Credit

Example: "Anthony Capraro Papers, Box 10, Folder 4, Immigration History Research Center, University of Minnesota."

Should the IHRC prove to be a significant resource for a publication, please send a copy to the IHRC.

Please note that all e-mail research inquiries will be handled in the order in which they arrive, due to the large volume of incoming messages. While our goal is to respond within three business days, sometimes other duties of the archivist designated to handle—among many other tasks—the inquiries received in the IHRC e-mail box will not allow us to accomplish that goal.

Other Inquiries

If you want to send us any other question or comment, please e-mail us at ihrc@umn.edu.

For both "Research" and "Other" inquiries, contact the IHRC via e-mail at ihrc@umn.edu.
