Ensuring the Future of the IHRC's Greek American Collection

The Immigration History Research Center is widely regarded as the nation's premier resource for the study of Greek American history. The cornerstone of this collection is the extensive body of personal and professional papers compiled by the eminent historian of Greek immigration, Theodore Saloutos. Also included are archival sources from individuals such as leading journalists Kostis Argoe and Demetrios Callimachos and organizations such as the Order of AHEPA, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America, and Minnesotans for Democracy in Greece. A rich composite of personal documentation is contained in the 100+ oral histories conducted by the Daughters of Penelope.

The IHRC also holds over 500 books and pamphlets written by, for, and about Greek Americans. Newspapers and serials comprise approximately 150 titles originating from various parts of North America and reflecting a full range of Greek American perspectives and interests.

Because of the unique value of this resource, used by researchers from around the world, its care and development require the commitment of ongoing, dedicated staff. Only someone with Greek language expertise, cultural knowledge, and archival/library experience can fully serve the needs of the Greek collection and the people who use it.

The Greek American Studies Fund will provide staff support, research awards, and outreach services to the Greek American community. The first goal is the establishment of a Greek American Fellowship for qualified graduate students.

Establishing the fellowship requires an initial gift or pledge of at least $25,000, with a total of $150,000 needed ultimately to endow it fully. The fellowship (as well as the Greek American Studies Fund in general) may be named after the primary, or "lead," donor.

As a national initiative, the creation of the Greek American Studies Fund will raise public consciousness of Greek American history, foster wider understanding of the contribution of Greek immigrants to American life, and make a significant investment in future scholars of the Greek experience in the United States.
