Abstract: Papers of Raymond Waldemar Wargelin (1911-2005), a Lutheran clergyman and educator, consist of unpublished writings including As I Saw It (Memoirs of Raymond W. Wargelin) [a dictated autobiography]; Suomi Synod Ministerium, 1876-1972; When the Suomi Synod was Served by Pastors From Finland; and Social and Theological Profiles of the Suomi Synod Ministerium. Included is a listing of congregations of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church, Suomi Synod. Also included are writings (mainly unpublished) and speeches by Wargelin and others dealing with religion, Finnish American history, personal history, and the history of the Suomi Synod and the Suomi Conference of the Lutheran Church of America.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Raymond Waldemar Wargelin (1911-2005), a Lutheran clergyman and educator, was born in Republic, Michigan. He served Suomi Synod Lutheran congregations in Berkeley and Reedley, California, and Fairport Harbor, Ohio; taught theology at Suomi College (Michigan) and later served as president; was executive director of the Suomi Synod Luther League; and was editor-in-chief of the Lutheran Counselor. He served as President (Bishop) of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church, Suomi Synod.


DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION

Wargelin's papers (115 linear ft., 1895-1990) consist of numerous unpublished writings of his own, including As I Saw It (Memoirs of Raymond W. Wargelin); Suomi Synod Ministerium, 1876-1972 ; When the Suomi Synod was Served by Pastors From Finland ; and Social and Theological Profiles of the Suomi Synod Ministerium, and collected works by others. Included is a comprehensive listing of congregations of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church , Suomi Synod. Also included are writings (mainly unpublished) and speeches by Wargelin and others dealing with religion, Finnish American history, personal history, and the history of the Suomi Synod and the Suomi Conference of the Lutheran Church of America. Additional materials include correspondence, resources used for Wargelin's publications, and a large series of ethno-cultural sacred musical material produced and gathered by his wife, Kaarina Wargelin.

Material includes correspondence, resources used for Reverend Wargelin's publications, an unpublished autobiography, sheet music for choirs collected by Mrs. Wargelin, and a large number of books and other publications from the Wargelin library. Included is also a copy of RW's MA thesis submitted at the University of California in 1940.
