Provenance/Processing | Preliminary Container List
There is some material on Preveden's attempt to establish a Chair of Croatian Studies in the U.S. in the late 1930's, largely in the form of personal correspondence and newspaper clippings.
Lastly, there is a rich selection of documents relating to the dispute between Preveden and the Croatian Fraternal Union over the publication of A History of the Croatian People. The correspondence, circulars and legal documents generated by this dispute provide much information on the political and cultural activities of Croatian-Americans during the 1940's and 1950's.
The following are some important dates in Preveden's life:
1890 - born Kamenica, Croatia
1922 - entered U.S.A.
1927 - received Ph.D. from University of Chicago
1926-33-Prof. of Classics, De Paul University
1938-41-Prof. of Classics, Duquesne University
1942-59-translator, various government organizations
1959 - died Washington, D.C.
The Preveden papers were deposited in the Immigrant Archives by Mr. Stanley Boric of Gary, Indiana in November of 1964. The collection comprises 9 1/2 linear feet.
Preliminary inventory prepared
for the Internet by student assistants Ezalina Hamzah and Paul Bowman in
2001.
