PROVENANCE

Collection acquired in August 2003 from Richard March of Madison, Wisconsin. It was processed by Daniel Necas in 2003. Inventory available.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Richard March is currently serving on the Wisconsin Arts Board as Folk and Community Arts Specialist focusing on immigrant and ethnic music in the Midwest region. He has also served as officer in the Milwaukee CFU Lodge.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION

Manuscript materials pertain to the Croatian American community in Milwaukee, WI, and Chicago, IL, mainly in the 1940's and 1950's, particularly to the activities of the local Croatian Fraternal Union (Hrvatska Bratska Zajednica) lodges. Print materials (Croatian, Macedonian and Serbian American periodicals, books) have been separated and removed to the IHRC Croatian, Macedonian and Serbian American print collections. Collection consists of meeting minutes books of the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 261 - Milwaukee (1946-1960), audio tape containg a recording of an interview with Mato Brzovic by Richard March, a small number of miscellaneous items (correspondence, announcements, cards) and photographs.

SERIES 1. Minutes Books (CFU)

FOLDER 1. Minutes Book, CFU Lodge 261 - Milwaukee December 1946 - June 1958
ITEM 1. One volume (500 pages, all actually hold information) containing the meeting minutes of the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 261 - Milwaukee for the time period of December 1946 to June 1958. The minutes were recorded by Frank Briski, Recording Secretary, in the Croatian language. The title page reads (among others) "Zapisnik odsjeka 261, H.B.Z."
FOLDER 2. Minutes Book, CFU Lodge 261 - Milwaukee July 1958 - December 1960
ITEM 1. One volume (506 pages, 107 actually hold information) containing the meeting minutes of the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 261 - Milwaukee for the time period of July 1958 to December 1960. The minutes were recorded by Frank Briski, Recording Secretary, in the Croatian language. The title page reads "Zapisnik Drustva 'Milwaukee', Odsjek 261, H.B.Z."

FOLDER 3. Interview with Mato Brzovic 1950-1970's
ITEM 1. One audio tape (60 minutes) containing an interview with Mato Brzovic (ca. 1890's - ca. 1978) Interview recorded in June 1977 in Chicago, IL, by Richard March. In this interview, Mato Brzovic reminisces of the following individuals: Don Nika Grskovic, Stjepan Lojen, Leo Fiser, Louis Adamic, Zlatko Balokovic. Also included is MB's work at the Narodni Glasnik newspaper. Mato Brzovic identified himself as Bosnian Croat, according to Richard March (8/1/03 - rec. by DN).
