Record group I. of the Dominic Massaro Collection is formed by materials received by the IHRC in 1987- 1988. This was the original accession of archival materials acquired from Judge Massaro through the efforts of John Andreozzi, Sons of Italy Archives Project Coordinator. The collection was processed by Edward Tebbenhoff, manuscript processing assistant at the IHRC in 1987-1988.

Description of Series

 

This section briefly describes each series in the collection. A more detailed description of the contents of each series may be found in the following section.

SERIES 1. Biography

The Biography series includes resumes, press releases, newspaper clippings, and other brief statements regarding Massaro's accomplishments and honors within OSIA and in his professional and private life.

SERIES 2. National OSIA Materials

The National series contains material on the Supreme (National) conventions, 1960-1987, as well as on Supreme Council (including Executive and Plenary sessions) meetings, 1963-1987. A particular strength of the entire collection is the amount of correspondence which Massaro generated while holding various positions both within and outside OSIA. The series contains much of the correspondence produced during his tenure in such offices as National Director of Public Relations, Chairman of the National Committee on Membership and Expansion, National Deputy and National Historian. There is also a considerable volume of letters and reports involving specific projects and activities such as the Anti-Defamation Commission, the OSIA Archives Project, the Committee Against Bias, Bigotry and Prejudice, the Anthony Project, the Casamento Medal of Honor Case, the Commission for Social Justice, the Immigration and Naturalization Committee, the Public Relations Committee, and Verrazzano College/Institute. With the exception of the Cooley's Anemia Foundation, there is relatively little material in this collection on charities. One of the many strengths of the collection is the presence of records of considerable age and historical interest. These include documents relating to litigation between the Supreme Lodge and the Sons of Italy Grand Lodge, Inc., a faction that broke away from the New York Grand Lodge, 1925-1930. In addition the series includes a 1941 pamphlet by Salvatore Parisi entitles "Little Journey through the Order" designed to promote the order among Americans of Italian descent.

SERIES 3. State Materials

The State series documents the activities of numerous State (Grand) lodges, with the bulk focusing on the New York Grand Lodge. Included are New York Grand Convention records, 1960-87, Grand Council Minutes, 1962-87, the correspondence of Grand Venerable, President Peter Brevett, and Grand Recording Secretary, Gregorio Morabito, as well as the general correspondence of the Grand Lodge. The series also contains numerous materials relating to various Grand Lodge activities, including the "Buffalo Project," -- a membership drive in western New York in the early 1960's; the correspondence of Leonard Covello relating to Education Committee affairs from the 1920's to the 1940's; and materials relating to the founding and on-going operation of the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum on Staten Island. In addition there is considerable information on theMembership and on Public Relations committees, which Massaro headed during the 1960's.

SERIES 4. District Materials

States with large numbers of local lodges are sometimes divided into geographic regions known as districts to help facilitate administration. The District series contains lists of Deputies who serve the districts as appointed representatives of the Grand Venerable. The series also contains the records of a Metropolitan New York, Westchester and Rockland County Regional meeting held in 1974-75.

SERIES 5. Local Materials

The Local series is one of the strongest elements of the Massaro collection. As national chairman of the Committee on Membership and Expansion he was instrumental in establishing local lodges in Bermuda and on Grand Bahama Island as well as in several parts of the United States. The centerpiece of this series, however, is the wealth of material on Massaro's home lodge, Northeast Bronx Lodge (later Vince Lombardi Lodge) No. 2091. This material includes minutes dating from the first formal meeting of the lodge in May 1959-1979, correspondence covering roughly the same period, officers' speeches, newsletters, booklets of the annual dinner dance, the financial records, by-laws, membership applications, a membership directory, attendance records, and lodge incorporation papers. Material in the Local series relating to lodges other than NE Bronx No. 2091 is much less extensive. Nevertheless, there are records, particularly newletters and correspondence, on lodges in the metropolitan New York area which demonstrate the relations which exist among various lodges in a given area. Taken together, the documents contained in the Local series offer a unique opportunity to examine OSIA activities at the local level.

SERIES 6. Non OSIA Groups and Activities

Non OSIA Groups and Activities is another highly significant part of the Massaro Papers and comprises over one third of the collection. This series has been organized into 5 sub-series: 1) Governmental Departments; 2) Organizations and Groups; 3) Personal Papers; 4) Political Affairs, and 5) Miscellaneous. Each subseries is organized alphabetically according to folder title. The Govermental Department subseries includes material relating to the Italian-American Curriculum Studies, the Nation Foreign Policy Conference on Human Rights, the New York Center for Ethnic Affairs, the New York City Commission on Human Rights and the New York State Division of Human Rights. Among the materials included in the Organizations and Groups subseries are: the American Committee on Italian Migration, AMITA, the Center for Migration Studies, Coordinating Committee of National American Italian Organizations, the Italian American Anti-Defamation League, Italian American Center for Urban Affairs, the Italian Apostolate, National Italian American Coordinating Association (NIACA), and numerous other Italian American organizations. There is also some material relating to homorary and religious groups such as the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre and the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. The Personal subseries includes Massaro's personal correspondence, correspondence relating to his New York State Supreme Court appoinment in 1987, miscellaneous invitations and speeches. The Political subseries records Massaro's involvement in various Republican political campaigns since 1960. The Miscellaneous subseries contains materials relating to a wide variety of subjects including Columbus Day parades, Italian American newspapers such as Il Popolo and the Italo-American Times, lists of Italian American publications in the U.S., considerable correspondence regarding Italian American prison inmates in New York State, and a variety of luncheons, awards, and publications relating to Italian Americans.

SERIES 7. Newsclippings

The Newsclippings series includes only those clippings which were already arranged in separate files at the time of their transfer to IHRC. Other newsclippings can be found scattered throughout the collection but have been left with their original material.

SERIES 8. Photographs

The Photograph series is comprised of a wide variety of photos, 1958-87, again divided into several subseries and organized chronologically. The subseries are: 1) Portraits- formal pictures of Massaro; 2) OSIA- photos relating to OSIA activities; 3) Non OSIA- photos taken at functions not related to the Sons of Italy and 4) Political- photos relating to various politcal campaigns with which Massaro was involved.

SERIES 9. Artifacts

Ribbons, bumperstickers, name tags, stamps and two phonograph records constitute most of the series labeled Artifacts.

SERIES 10. Supplementary

In the supplementary series, there includes correspondence regarding the archives project and the Commission for Social Justice. Also included, are the actions taken for the CSJ.

SERIES 11. Oversize Materials

Included in this series are a photograph of the 1969 Supreme Convention, a stecncil for the "Italo-American Times" and two large OSIA placards. These items are placed in oversize photograph and artifact boxes.

States with large numbers of local lodges are sometimes divided into geographic regions known as districts to help facilitate administration. The District series contains lists of Deputies who serve the districts as appointed representatives of the Grand Venerable. The series also contains the records of a Metropolitan New York, Westchester and Rockland County Regional meeting held in 1974-75.

SERIES 5. Local Materials

The Local series is one of the strongest elements of the Massaro collection. As national chairman of the Committee on Membership and Expansion he was instrumental in establishing local lodges in Bermuda and on Grand Bahama Island as well as in several parts of the United States. The centerpiece of this series, however, is the wealth of material on Massaro's home lodge, Northeast Bronx Lodge (later Vince Lombardi Lodge) No. 2091. This material includes minutes dating from the first formal meeting of the lodge in May 1959-1979, correspondence covering roughly the same period, officers' speeches, newsletters, booklets of the annual dinner dance, the financial records, by-laws, membership applications, a membership directory, attendance records, and lodge incorporation papers. Material in the Local series relating to lodges other than NE Bronx No. 2091 is much less extensive. Nevertheless, there are records, particularly newletters and correspondence, on lodges in the metropolitan New York area which demonstrate the relations which exist among various lodges in a given area. Taken together, the documents contained in the Local series offer a unique opportunity to examine OSIA activities at the local level.

SERIES 6. Non OSIA Groups and Activities

Non OSIA Groups and Activities is another highly significant part of the Massaro Papers and comprises over one third of the collection. This series has been organized into 5 sub-series: 1) Governmental Departments; 2) Organizations and Groups; 3) Personal Papers; 4) Political Affairs, and 5) Miscellaneous. Each subseries is organized alphabetically according to folder title. The Govermental Department subseries includes material relating to the Italian-American Curriculum Studies, the Nation Foreign Policy Conference on Human Rights, the New York Center for Ethnic Affairs, the New York City Commission on Human Rights and the New York State Division of Human Rights. Among the materials included in the Organizations and Groups subseries are: the American Committee on Italian Migration, AMITA, the Center for Migration Studies, Coordinating Committee of National American Italian Organizations, the Italian American Anti-Defamation League, Italian American Center for Urban Affairs, the Italian Apostolate, National Italian American Coordinating Association (NIACA), and numerous other Italian American organizations. There is also some material relating to homorary and religious groups such as the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre and the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. The Personal subseries includes Massaro's personal correspondence, correspondence relating to his New York State Supreme Court appoinment in 1987, miscellaneous invitations and speeches. The Political subseries records Massaro's involvement in various Republican political campaigns since 1960. The Miscellaneous subseries contains materials relating to a wide variety of subjects including Columbus Day parades, Italian American newspapers such as Il Popolo and the Italo-American Times, lists of Italian American publications in the U.S., considerable correspondence regarding Italian American prison inmates in New York State, and a variety of luncheons, awards, and publications relating to Italian Americans.
