PROVENANCE

Collection acquired from the International Institute of San Francisco, California in March 1997. It was processed by Margaret Hall and Lisa Stretz in 1999 and 2004. Finding aid included in IHRC VITRAGE in 2005.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Established in 1918 as an educational program for immigrant women and girls under the leadership of the San Francisco YWCA, the Institute gained independence in 1934 and joined the local Community Chest as a charter member. Throughout its history, the Institute has provided various services and resettlement assistance to large numbers of immigrants and refugees in California, contributing significantly to the integration of newcomers from around the world into the society. DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION

The records include annual reports, meeting minutes of the board of directors, organizational correspondence, files of the Institute's officers and case workers, documentation on various programs within the Institute such as the Club La Senores for Latin American women, the Japanese war brides program, resettlement projects for refugees from Cuba, Hungary, China, Poland, the Philippines, Southeast Asia, etc. The collection is particularly rich in materials pertaining to the International Institute's work with the Asian American communities of the San Francisco Bay area. Included are also a large number of photographs documenting the Institute's activities. Search the IHRC online database COLLAGE for digital images of selected photographs from the collection.

This section briefly describes each series in the collection. A more detailed description of the contents of each series may be found in the following section.

SERIES 1. Board and Staff Meeting Minutes and Reports (Boxes 1-8)

This series contains the IISF Board of Directors meeting minutes in chronological order from 1922-1984, often including the Annual Report for those years. There are also Staff, Auxiliary Board, and Management Team meeting minutes for various years.

SERIES 2. Administration and Finance of the Institute (Boxes 9-10)

The files in this series pertain to the administration of the IISF, including Board of Directors files (nominations, rosters, etc), the IISF audit and financial statements, and the correspondence of members in the administration.

SERIES 3. Other Administrative Files (Boxes 10-12)

Included in this series are miscellaneous IISF administrative files, such as staff lists, correspondence with other International Institutes and other counties in California, and the IISF employee manual.

SERIES 4. History and Philosophy of the Institute (Boxes 13-14)

This series deals with the formation of the IISF, including the articles of incorporation and by-laws, and the history of the IISF since it’s formation. The booklet “Around the World in 80 Years” was compiled to celebrate 80 years of the IISF and many of the files in this series pertain to the research that was done on the history of the IISF for this booklet.

SERIES 5. Statistics (Boxes 14-16)

All the files in this series contain some form of statistical report pertaining to the immigrants that arrived in San Francisco, the cases presented to the IISF, or programs that were part of the IISF outreach to immigrants.

SERIES 6. Children's Bureau (Box 16)

The Department of Labor-Children’s Bureau worked with the International Institute of San Francisco and these files contain correspondence between the two institutions and also statistical reports of the number of cases for each ethnic group that the two institutions collaborated on.

SERIES 7. Case Files (Box 16)

Each file in this series deals with one individual or family that the International Institute of San Francisco represented or worked with as they settled into their new life in the United States. Included in the files are correspondence, registration and informational forms, and other documentation pertaining to the individual cases.

SERIES 8. Ethnic Groups (Boxes 16-23)

This series contains files on various ethnic groups and programs, both within and outside of the IISF, that work with these immigrants. These files are organized in alphabetical order by ethnic group and contain correspondence, reports, flyers, and other publications.

SERIES 9. Projects, Program Proposals, and Reports (Boxes 23-30)

The files in this series pertain to miscellaneous projects, proposals, and reports of the International Institute of San Francisco.

SERIES 10. IISF Coalition (Boxes 30-32)

These files center around the IISF Coalition for the Rights of Immigrants, which was formed in response to the Eilberg Bill that was passed in January of 1977. The records cover a variety of topics, including correspondence, minutes, various consulates and cases, immigration laws, and the American Council for Nationalities Service.

SERIES 11. Immigration Services Institutions (Boxes 32-34)

This series deals with immigration in general, including both reports about immigration and files on institutions dealing with one aspect of immigration. These institutions worked with the IISF, either to help an immigrant or to provide information on the process of immigration.

SERIES 12. Benefits and Fundraisers (Boxes 34-37)

Included in this series are the files planning various benefits and fundraisers for the IISF, such as the Cultural Heritage dinners or recipe books sold by the IISF to raise money.

SERIES 13. News Bulletins and other Publications (Boxes 37-39)

The files in this series contain various publications that were written and/or sponsored by the IISF, including the IISF Almanac, the IISF newsletters, guides that were written by the IISF to help new immigrants when they arrived in San Francisco.

SERIES 14. Directories (Box 40)

This series contains pamphlets and/or lists of people and organizations available to help immigrants once they arrived in San Francisco. Most of the directories are geared toward specific immigrant groups or age groups.

SERIES 15. Miscellaneous Projects (Box 40)

Included in this series are reports and other publications not prepared by the International Institute of San Francisco but still dealing in some way with immigration, immigrants or the work of the International Institute.

SERIES 16. Audio/Visual Materials (Boxes 41-42)

This series contains various photographs, slides, and videocassettes that were collected or done by the International Institute over the years.

SERIES 17. Oversize Materials (Oversize Boxes 1-8)

These boxes hold the miscellaneous scrapbooks and other items that are too large to fit in the regular collection boxes.
