The kinotis (community) acted as the governing body for local immigrant Greek communities, establishing church and school and administering the necessary funds for both. The equivalent of a New England town meeting, the kinotis was headed by an elected board of directors. Although the kinotis exerted considerable influence on Greek American affairs, its decisions occasioned frequent quarrels over administrative matters. Nonetheless, through its involvement with the parish church and school, it provided the cement of Greek American communities, particularly in the early years of settlement.
