PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, NJ), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Valjas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Aarne Vahtra was born on 24.05.1940 in Põltsamaa, Estonia and died on 27.01.2011 in Toronto, Canada. He studied in gymnasium in Tallinn (graduated in 1958), Tallinn Pedagogical Institute. He was artist and cultural figure. 1974-1977 he worked in The Noorsooteater= Youth Theatre as a director; The Ministry of Culture as a deputy manager and as a head of the Theatre Department; radio station "Vaba Euroopa" as a co-worker and in Canada he was a owner of a construction company. 1982 he fled to France and in 1987 moved to Canada. Social activities: corp. Fraternitas Estica (member), Eesti Kunstnike Koondis Torontos=Estonian Artists Team in Toronto (member), Estonian theatre in Toronto "Ilutuli"= The Lampion (stagehand, producer, actor, head of performing, director). He practiced painting, graphic art, sculpture, caricature and miniprint. His personal exhibitions have been in several places in America and Europe (for example in New York, Vancouver, Paris, Varssav, Stockholm, Tallinn, Tartu and Pärnu). He has a daughter: Sirja-Liisa and a son: Lauri.
