Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Valjas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
Leonhard Vahter was born on 14.03.1896 in Kalvi manor, Virumaa, and died on 12.02.1983 in New York. He studied at 1st Science School in Tallinn (graduated in 1923), 1924-1927 at University of Tartu and graduated with MA of law. He participated in Estonian War of Independence (1918-1920). Since the year 1928 he was an officer of the 1st Infantry Regiment. He worked 1929-1931 as attorney of law of J.Kuuski, 1931-1934 as assistant of A.Osman and since 1934 attorney of law in Narva. He was a member of the National Council. In 1944, he fled to Germany and in 1949 emigrated to USA. He was editor in "Baltic Review" and he also published his works about Soviet law and history of philosophy.
