Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, NJ), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Valjas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
Parfeni Valgemäe was born on 13.11.1909 in Penuja, Viljandi, Estonia, and died on 03.07. 1977 in Lakewood, New Jersey, USA. He was a cellist and a music teacher. He studied at the Boys' Gymnasium of Science in Viljandi, graduated from the Conservatory of Tallinn and in 1933 from the Pedagogical School in Tallinn. In 1933-1940 he worked at the Carl Robert Jakobson Gymnasium as mathematics and music teacher in Viljandi, Estonia. In Gesilingen DP camp he was director of Estonian School. In 1949, he emigrated to USA. In Lakewood he worked in construction. Social activities: Estonian Girl and Boy Scout Support Societies Union in USA (member); Orthodox Church of Estonia Holy Trinity Congregation of New York (member); Estonian Society of Lakewood (board member), conductor of the Lakewood Estonian Male Chorus.
