PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, NJ), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Valjas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Juhan Vasar was born on 17.03.1905 in Põltsamaa, Estonia, and died on 26.09.1972 in New York, USA. He graduated in 1921 from the Põltsamaa Gymnasium and Teachers Seminary of Tartu. In 1921-1922, Juhan Vasar worked as teacher at an elementary school in Lalsi. During the years 1922-1927, he studied philosophy in University of Tartu. In 1927, he received his MA degree, in 1931 his PhD. In 1927-1930, he was as a research scholar in Stockholm, Uppsala, Riga and Helsinki. In 1930-1931, worked at the University of Tartu as assistant lecturer, 1931-1937 as assistant professor of general history, 1938-1944 as professor of economic history, he was also in 1936-1940 director of the scientific and art department of the Ministry of Education, 1941-1944 Estonian Municipal Director of Education assistant. In 1944 he fled to Germany. There he was a teacher in Augsburg Estonian Gymnasium. He emigrated to USA in 1949. Since 1951 worked in various universities including Rutgers University. 1955-1956 he was a chairman of the Estonian World Council, 1955-1956 editor in radio station "Eesti Vabaduse Hääl"=Voice of Estonian Freedom. He wrote works in areas as economic history and history of University of Tartu, he was one of the authors of "Eesti Rahva Ajalugu"= History of Estonian Nation.
