PROVENANCE

Collection acquired from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A., Lakewood, New Jersey, in 2003-2005. It was processed in May 2013 by Peeter Väljas and Aet Tran-Tõnissoo of the National Archives of Estonia in Tallinn, working with IHRC Archivist Daniel Necas.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Aarand Roos - Estonian linguist, writer, diplomat and politician Born in1940 in Tartus Estonia. 1944 the Roos family fled to Sweden. Studied in Sweden in schools in Sunderby, Lund and in Estonian Gymnasim in Stockholm. Studied philology and phonetics in univesrities in Lund (Sweden), Uppsala (Sweden), Jyväskyla (Finland) and Szegedi (Hungary); cand. phil 1969 (University of Lund), dr. phil 1980 (University of Lund). In Sweden worked as an editor and collaborator for several Estonian language news editions 1976 moved to USA 1976 - 1978 worked in newsroom of "Voice of America" in Washington 1980 - 1982 lector in finno-ugric institute of Lund University in Sweden 1982 -1995 consul of Estonian Republic in New Yorgis 1996 returned to Estonia, worked in Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Organizations: Rootsi Eestlaste Esinduskogu (deputy1966-1970) Eesti Teaduslik Selts Rootsis Eesti Kristliku Rahvapartei (Estonian Christian People´s Party) presidendikandidaat 2001 In 1998 was bestowed Order of the National Coat of Arms, 4th class, he returned this Order in 2003 as protest to Estonian joining the European Union Has published articles about linguistic and religious questions, fiction and poetry in Estonia, Swenden, USA and others
