PROVENANCE

Collection acquired from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A., Lakewood, New Jersey, in 2003-2005. It was processed in May 2013 by Peeter Väljas and Aet Tran-Tõnissoo of the National Archives of Estonia in Tallinn, working with IHRC Archivist Daniel Necas.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Ilmar Rebane (1907 Tartu, Estonia) - 2001 Quakertown, Pennsylvania, USA) - lawyer and public figure Studied in Hugo Treffner Gymnasium (Tartu, Estonia), 1925 - 1932 studied Law in Tartu University, 1933 – 1940 worked in Tartu district court as an assistant attorney general and as a counsellor for Chancellor of Justice. 1944 fled to Germany, was a teacher in Estonian Gymnasium of Odenburgi DP camp. 1948 moved to Sweden, 1956 moved to USA, where he worked as technical draftsman Organizations – Eesti Üliõpilaste Selts = Estonian Students Society (member; chairman EÜS Stockholmi chapter; chairman ofcouncil of elders; honorary alumnus), Eesti Õigusteadlaste Ühing (The Association of Estonian Jurists); The Estonian Educational Society (New York); Eesti Kultuurifond Ameerika Ühendriikides (The Foundation for Estonian Arts and Letters);Eesti Arhiiv Ühendriikides (Estonian Archives in the United states; member of the council)
