PROVENANCE

Collection acquired from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A., Lakewood, New Jersey, in 2003-2005. It was processed in May 2013 by Peeter Väljas and Aet Tran-Tõnissoo of the National Archives of Estonia in Tallinn, working with IHRC Archivist Daniel Necas.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Studied in Loodna basic school (Lääne county, Estonia), then in Gustav Adolf Gymnasium, 1944 escaped to Germany, in the DP camp attended the Lübeck Estonian Gymnasium and after attending the Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany from 1946 to 1948 he migrated to Australia in 1949. He graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1955. Worked in Western Mining Corporation (WMC Ltd.) 1956 - 1999 ( Underground Surveyor, Underground Manager, Technical Assistant to the Managing Director, Deputy General Superintendent, General Manager, Director, Deputy Managing Director, Managing Director, Chairman and Managing Director, Executive Chairman). Parbo was also Chairman of Alcoa of Australia , Chairman of Munich Reinsurance Company of Australia, Chairman of Zurich Australian Insurance group, Director of the Aluminium Company of America, Hoechst Australian Investments, Chase AMP Bank and Sara Lee Corporation, Director and chairman of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company, chairman of Egon Zehnder Global Corporate Governance Advisory Board, chairman of the Pricewaterhouse Coopers Energy and Mining Advisory Group Organizations: Australia-Japan Business Co-operative Committee (president); Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (president); Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (president) Awards: In the 1978, Arvi Parbo was knighted (Knight Bachelor). In 1993 - Companion of the Order of Australia, 2005 - Estonian Order of the White Star, 2th Class Honorary Doctor of Deakin University (1989), Monash University (1989), Curtin University of Technology (1989), Flinders University (1991), Central Queensland University (2000), University of Sydney (2000)
