Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Väljas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
Arvo Kalbus was born on 21.02.1913 in Moscow, Russia. He studied at the Gymnasium of J.Westholm (1920-1931). 1942 he graduated University of Tartu faculty of Law. He was a member of the Estonian Students Society "Raimla". He worked in the Estonian News Agency (1935-1940) as editor, deputy director and editor in chief. 1944 he left to Germany, where he was a editor in chief in periodicals "Eesti Post"="Estonian Post" and "Our Life" (Geislingen, 1948). 1950 he emigrated to USA. There he worked in the USA Informatsiooniagentuuri = U. S. Information Agency "Ameerika Hääl"= "Voice of America" Estonian Service until the 1966 as reporter, translator, editor and commentary writer. Father: Tõnis (1880-1942) was Estonian Minister of the Interior and was arrested in 1941, died in Siberia, camp Sosva, region Sverdlovsk. Mother: Salme (maiden name Kollist). Arvo Kalbus was married twice; second wife was Evy (Evi) Laamann Kalbus, they were married since 1956.
