Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Väljas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
Karl Kiisk was born on 25.03.1909 in Tartu, Estonia and died in October 1974 in New Jersey, USA. He studied at Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in Tartu, 1928-1934 in University of Tartu, faculty of theology and also graduated in 1931 courses for postgraduates in Estonian Military School. Karl Kiisk was a clergyman in EELC congregation Karula (1934-1944). In 1944, he fled to Germany and there he worked as a reverend in DP camps (1944-1951). In 1952, he emigrated to USA and worked as a farm and factory worker. In 1953-1960, he worked as reverend of EELC in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, and in 1960-1962 in Chicago, he also worked in Seabrook Congregation Sunday, Bible and Confirmation School. Social activities: students Society "Liivika", 1958-1959 edition "Eesti kirik vabaduses"=Estonian Church in Freedom (editor in chief), 1952-1960 newspaper "Portlandi Eestlaste Teated : E.E.L.K. Portlandi Koguduse teateleht" = The Newsletter of the Estonian Lutheran Church of Portland (editor). He was married to Amanda Kiisk (maiden name Kuningas), he had two sons - Allan and Vello.
