PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, NJ), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2009. Gristel Ramler and Birgit Nurme of the National Archives in Tallin, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

08.07.1897 - 21.11.1965 Scarsdale, NY, USA Born in Puhja, Tartumaa, Estonia. Wife: Salme Kaiv (ne Väinoja, married in 1939); daughter: Maret Ann Kaiv (1945); son: Peeter-Johannes (1948) Estonian diplomat. From 1935 Estonian consul in Australia. 1940 - 1965 served as the Consul General of Estonia in charge of Legation in U.S.


DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION

Collection is organized into seven folders: 1. Orbituary, funeral service sheets 2. International diplomatic documents about Estonia 1917-1941 collected by J. Kaiv, forwarded to Trygve Lie (translations in English) 3. Acts and facts pertaining to the agression of the USSR against Estonia and latter's international status as set forth in official statements, compiled by J. Kaiv (copies) 4. Prints: Reprint from The Annals of The American Academy of Political and Social Science (article "Estonian Nationalism" by J. Kaiv); Statement to the Press by the Estonian Representative by J. Kaiv, NY, 07.02.1944 5. Collected magazines and copies from newspapers, clippings about J. Kaiv 6. Collected documents about J. Kaiv as a painter: Invitations of exhibitions, photos of paintings, clippings, copies from newspapers 7. In Memoriam Johannes Kaiv: Album with signatures of funeral guests
