PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2012. Gristel Ramler and Tiina Trumberg of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

26. Jan.1901 Tartu, Estonia – 06. May 1990 Norrahammar, Sweden Studied in Tartu City Gymnasium (Tartu Linnagümnaasium), joined the Estonian fighters in the Estonian War of Independence. Was sent to the Estonian Military School straight from the front. By the time he graduated, the war had ended. Kangro was appointed as an ensign in Sakala partisan battalion in Viljandi. Started gathering historical material about his battalion already as a young officer. In 1934 Peeter Kangro was transferred to Tallinn and started working in the Historical Committee of the War of Independence. During his service there, he was promoted as captain. During the first Soviet occupation, Kangro left the Soviet Army and joined the Home Guard, was the Home Guard's chief of staff in Petseri and head of administration in Tallinn. 1942-1944 was the commander of Saaremaa Home Guard. 1944 emigrated to Norrahammer, Sweden. Worked in the Husqvarna factory laboratory for the rest of his life.Was an active member of the emigrant community: chairman of the Jönköping Estonian Society, chairman of the Southern Sweden Congregation council, member of Estonian Cultural Foundation in Sweden. Was the editor of the Estonian Encyclopedia Military Department. He also sent his collected materials to the Estonian Archive in Lakewood, USA. V. Pinn has used Kangro's memoirs in his book.
