PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Väljas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Jõgis, Heino was born on 02.15.1928 in Tallinn, Estonia. He fled to Germany in 1944 and later (before 1951) emigrated to USA. Education: primary school in Rakvere, Estonia; Estonian gymnasium in Augsburg, Germany; Technische Hochschule, Stuttgart, Germany; Berkeley University of California, graduated B.S. in 1951, M.S. in 1957. Occupation field: construction engineering; position held: from 1953 chief engineer of Standard Oil of California, San Francisco. He also served in US Air Force. Married to Judith Jõgis (maiden name Leonard), daughter Kristi, sons Karl and Christopher Hendrik. Community work: California Chapter of the Estonian Students´ Society (chairman), The Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church Congregation in San Francisco (chairman of the Congregational Board), Estonian American National Council (council member), Estonian Freedom Fighters of San Francisco (founding member, member of the board), Estonian-American Benevolent Society (vice-chairman), newspaper "Vaba Eesti Sõna"/"Free Estonian Word" (member of the editorial board), San Francisco Estonian Society (founding member, member of the board, chairman), San Francisco Estonian Choir (chairman), American Security Council (member), National Republican Senatorial Committee (member), Republican National Committee (member) Decorations: IV Class Order of the White Star (Estonia) 2003
