Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Väljas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
Aleksander Jürisson was born on 07.03.1913 in parish Kaarma-Suure, Saaremaa, Estonia and died on 17.08.1990 in New York, USA. He studied in Saaremaa Gymnasium and 1934-1938 in University of Tartu, faculty of theology, 1939 he graduated theology with MA degree. Since 1938 he was a part of Orthodox Church of Estonia (EOC), also he was a secretary of Metropolis EOC and master in religion at English College in Tallinn, Estonia. 1944 he fled to Germany and 1949 emigrated to USA. There he became an Archpriest of EOC in Exile, Secretary General of The Synod and Plenipotentiary on the Foreign Relations of the EOC in Exile, Administrator of the EOC during the vacancy of the Metropolitan See (since 1953), Executive Secretary of the Division of World Relief and Interchurch Aid of The National Council of the Episcopal Church in USA. In 1935, A. Jürisson married Larissa Jürisson (maiden name Schöberg), daughter Ariadna.
