PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Väljas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Arvo Johari was born in Võru, Estonia on 03.05.1909 and died in Olofströmi, Sweden on 08.10.1996. He studied in Tõrva and Võru elementary schools, Võru Teachers Seminary, College of Tallinn and in the Military School of Estonia in Tallinn. He was a second lieutenant in Estonian Defense Forces. He took part in WW II with Finnish Army and with German military forces. In 1944, Johari fled to Germany where he worked as teacher in Oberkassel Elementary School and Gymnasium, in Graven elementary School, also he was a leader of the ethnic group in camp Münster, leader of the Christian Association of the Young Men in Graven and in Münster, was a member of several committees of the refugee camps, took part in British Occupation Region of the Estonian Central Committee in Great Britain's occupation zone. He emigrated to Sweden where he worked in companies Svenskt Stal AB and Volvo. In Sweden he was participating in EELC South-Sweden Congregation and Olofström Congregation (board member, secretary, treasurer aid). Arvo Johari was married to Nora Johari.
