PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Väljas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Olga Berendsen was born on 09.12.1916 in Moscow, Russia and died on 06.11.2003 in USA. Her maiden name was Paris, she was married to Olev Berendsen. In 1920 family came back to Estonia. There she graduated girls gymnasium in Tartu ("Tartu Noorsoo Kasvatuse Seltsi Tütarlaste Gümnaasium") in 1935 and started her studies about art history in the Faculty of Philosophy in the University of Tartu. 1938-1939 studied in the University of Sorbonne at France, 1943 graduated University of Tartu with the MA in philosophy. 1940-1944 worked in the Institute of Art History of the University of Tartu as an assistant. 1944 moved to Germany and in 1949 emigrated to USA. 1958-1960 worked in Cooper Union Museum, New York as an assistant. 1961 acquired PhDs of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. 1960-1965 worked as an assistant professor of the Ohio State University, Columbus, USA; 1965-1984 worked as an associate professor of the Rutgers University, New Brunswick, USA. Organizational and social activities: member of the College Art Association of America; member of the Renaissance Society of America; member of the corp. Filiae Patriae; member of the Estonian Senior Club of Lakewood; 1989 she was elected to the board of the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood) as a chairperson.
