PROVENANCE
Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2011. Gerli Raadik and Peeter Väljas of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.
HISTORICAL SKETCH
Veljo Areng was born on May 19th, 1933, in Tallinn, Estonia. Fled to Germany in 1944 from where he emigrated to the USA in 1955. He studied in Estonian elementary school and gymnasium in Geislingen, Germany. In the USA he studied at Purdue University, graduated (B.S.) in 1966. Worked in the field of structural engineering, 1974-2000 was a co-owner of the Dragan-Areng Associates Inc (Silver Spring, Maryland). Social activities: member of the corp. Rotalia (acad. fraternity); member of the Estonian World Council; board member of the Estonian American National Council; board member and vice-chairman of the Washington Estonian Society, also participated of organizing ESTO festivals.
His father was Arnold Areng (Abramson, 1896-1980), and mother was Hille Areng (1960-1955). Veljo Areng was married (1960-1992) to Krista Areng (maiden name Brun) and had a daughter Aili (born in 1967).
