PROVENANCE

Collection transferred to the IHRC from the Estonian Archives in the U.S.A. (EAU) in 2003-2005. It was processed as part of a collaborative project between the Estonian Archives in the USA (Lakewood, New Jersey), the National Archives of Estonia (NAE), and the IHRC in March 2012. Gristel Ramler and Tiina Trumberg of the National Archives in Tallinn, Estonia, worked with IHRC staff on the project.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

15.12.1923 Mahu parish, Virumaa county, Estonia – 2002?

Father: Eduard Eik; Mother: Liina Eik

Agronomist, agricultural scientist. Graduated from high school in Estonia in 1943. 1944 emigrated to Germany, in 1949 to USA. 1947 – 1949 studied in the agronomy and forestry department of the Baltic University in Germany. 1953 graduated from Iowa State University (B.S), 1958 M.S degree from Iowa State University, 1962 PhD from Iowa State University. 1953-1955 worked as a technician in Iowa Agricultural Laboratory, 1955 – 1975 in Iowa State University as a research assistant. From 1975 assistant professor in Iowa State University. Member of American Society of Agronomy, member of Soil and Plant Analysis Council and Soil Science Society of America. Kalju Eik was one of the organizers of the Midwest Estonian Youth Congresses (KLENK, Kesk-Lääne Eesti Noorte Sõpruspäevad) and a member of Chicago Estonian House and Minnesota Estonian House. Had three brothers.

SERIES 1. Biographical and personal documents

Series consists of 16 folders. Kalju Eik's memoirs and notes about his education in Germany, documents describing his everyday life in USA, documents related to organizing traveling and holidays.

SERIES 2. Documents concerning various activities, festivals and events of Estonian organizations Kalju Eik participated in

Series consists of 43 folders. Documents of several Estonian organizations, including Kalju Eik's correspondence (received and sent letters) about organizing events or participating. Most noteworthy are folders 18-20, which consist of documents related to the organizing of Midwest Estonian Youth Congress (KLENK, Kesk-Lääne Eesti Noorte Sõpruspäevad) in 1958-2000, including correspondence with other organizers, KLENK's circular letters and other documents. Folders 21 and 22 consist of documents related to the Minnesota and Chicago Houses of Estonia.

SERIES 3. Correspondence

Series consists of 37 folders. Letters and postcards sent to Kalju Eik and copies or worksheets of Kalju Eik's letters to addressees. Most of the letters are from Estonians abroad and date back to 1946. Folder 46 and 47 include the correspondence with several Estonian publishers abroad about subscriptions of the Estonian magazines and books. Many family photos are added to the personal correspondence.

Series consists of 8 folders about various Estonian organizations abroad, collected by Kalju Eik; print-outs from various e-mailing lists analyzing Estonian politics in the 1990s etc.

SERIES 5. Prints, copies and newspaper clippings

Series consists of 13 folders. In addition to newspaper clippings about Estonia, there is a newspaper of the Baltic University student organization (in Germany) Scientiae et Artibus in folder 90; a ship newspaper from General C.H.Muir (the ship on which Kalju Eik arrived to USA) in folder 92.
