Helena (Ogrodowska) Bristol (b. 1896) was born in Zyrardo, Poland. She came to the United States in 1905 with her family so that her father could escape conscription into the Russian army; they settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia College of Music and for many years taught English at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Ogrodowska authored several books, including House of Tuttle; After Thirty Years: Poland Revisited (1939); and Let the Blackbird Sing: A Novel in Verse (1952).
