In the chaos of the first months following the end of World War II in Germany, in one of the numerous refugee camps set up for displaced persons from many European countries afflicted by the war, a chorus was assembled from a number of musically inclined refugees by a conductor and composer previously trained and active in Latvia. The Latvian Chorus Shield of Songs (Koris Dziesmu Vairogs) was formed at Grosshabersdorf near Nuremberg by Arnold Kalnajs.
First concerts were performed in the fall of 1945 in the nearby camps and churches, some of which were used by the United States military for its religious services.
