Monographs

The IHRC Slovak American monograph collection numbers about 820 books and pamphlets.  Religion, organizational activity, general and community history, migration, acculturation, and politics are all strongly represented.  Also available are works on literature, education, art, music, the press, work, customs, and folklore.  Among the relevant bibliographies in the IHRC's reference section are Esther Jerabek's Czechs and Slovaks in North America (1976), Joseph S. Roucek and Patricia Pinkham's American Slavs: A Bibliography (1944), and Stanley B. Kimball's Slavic-American Imprints: A Classified Catalog of the Collection at Lovejoy Library (1972).

The importance of the church in the lives of Slovak immigrants and their descendants is reflected in works relating to both Catholics and Protestants.  There are many jubilee and commemorative publications; these often contain important information about individuals and communities as well as about parishes.  There are also hymn books, sermons, catechisms, and Lutheran and Catholic Bibles.  George Dolak's A History of the Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States of America, 1902-1927 (1955), Richard Portasik's Slovak Franciscans in America: History of Most Holy Savior Commissariat (1966), Michael Lasko's The Churches of the Eastern Rite in North America (1964), Fedor Ruppeldt's Slovenski evangelici v Amerike (Slovak Lutherans in America, 1931), Sr. M. Martina Tybor's Slovak American Catholics (1976), and June Granatir Alexander's The Immigrant Church and Community: Pittsburgh's Slovak Catholics and Lutherans, 1880-1915 (1987) are representative of the large number of writings on religion.

Organizational activities of Slovak Americans are represented by numerous anniversary publications as well as other works.  Examples are Jozef Pauco's Sixty Years of the Slovak League of America (1967); publications of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Union and the First Catholic Slovak Union; souvenir journals of the First Slovak Wreath of the Free Eagle and the Ladies Pennsylvania Slovak Roman and Greek Catholic Union; the Diamond Jubilee, 1893-1968 of the Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union; and souvenir and memorial books of the Slovak Catholic Sokol.

Historical works comprise both general histories and histories of Slovak Americans in particular areas.  Also included are numerous works on the homeland.  General works include Panorama: A Historical Review of Czechs and Slovaks in the United States of America (1971), Konstantin Culen's Dejiny Slovakov v Amerike (History of Slovaks in America, 1942), the Foreign Language Information Service's Slovaks Under the Stars and Stripes (1900), Sr. M. Martina Tybor's Chronology: The Slovaks in America to the End of the Nineteenth Century (1979), Howard F. Stein's An Ethno-Historic Study of Slovak-American Identity (1972), and Slovaks in America: A Bicentennial Study (1978).  There are also histories and studies of Slovaks in New York, Ohio, California, Bridgeport, Chicago, Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh.

Slovak American political activity is reflected in works dealing with ties to the homeland and works pertaining to involvement in mainstream United States politics.  M. Mark Stolarik's The Role of American Slovaks in the Creation of Czecho-Slovakia, 1914-1918 (1968) is an example of the former.

Publications pertaining to the processes of migration and acculturation include Joseph Pauco's fictional Flight to Wonderland (1963); Zaciatky ceskej a slovenskej emigrácie do USA: Ceská a Slovenská robotnicka emigrácia v USA v období I. internacionály (The Beginnings of Czech and Slovak Emigration to the U.S.A.: Emigration of Czech and Slovak Workers to the USA in the Period of the First Internationale), edited by Josef Polisenský (1970); William P. Shriver's Slovaci v Amerike (Slovaks in America, 1935); M. Mark Stolarik's Emigration, Education and Urbanization: A Comparison of the Actions, Ideas and Experiences of Slovaks in the Old World and the New, 1880-1918 (n.d.); Stolarik's Immigration and Urbanization: The Slovak Experience, 1870-1918 (1974); and Greg M. Chaklo's The Unmelting Ethnic: A Brief Profile of Early Slovak-American Immigration in the Metropolitan Pittsburgh Area (1974).

Slovak American interests in and contributions to art, music, and especially literature are well documented in the collection.  Musical works include religious music, folksongs, and choral works.  Materials on art include biographies and exhibition catalogs such as Slovak Art Exhibition in New York (1938).  The collection contains numerous works of poetry and fiction.  Overviews are supplied by Ivan J. Kramoris's Chronological Outline of Slovak Literature and History (1946) and his Anthology of Slovak Poetry (1947), and by William E. Harkins's Czech and Slovak Literature (1950).  Individual works include Thomas Bell's Out of This Furnace (1941), and Michael Simko's Mila Nadaya (Beloved Nadaya, 1968).  Authors represented include Rudolf Dilong, Jozef Ciger, Milos K. Mlynarovic, Pavol Orszagh, Josef Pauco, Mikulas Sprinc, and others.

Slovak American cultural activities are represented by travel books; humorous works; sports works, such as Slet Manual; XI. Slet and Gymnastic Meet of the Slovak Gymnastic Union Sokol in U.S.A., compiled by Joe Skapik and Charles Bednar (1950); and depictions of folklore and customs, such as Jozef Duris's Slovak Christmas, A Symposium of Songs, Customs, and Plays (1960).  The ethnic press is outlined in George Leo Yashur's A Preliminary History of the Slovak Press in America (1950).  In addition, the collection includes several grammar books, citizenship manuals, and studies on philology such as Joseph M. Kirschbaum's Contemporary Tendencies in Slovak Philology (1960).
