The Episcopate was officially established in 1929, although the first Romanian Orthodox parish in the United States was organized in 1904. The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America is the ecclesiastical center for about 50,000 Romanian Orthodox Christians in this country, with central offices located in Jackson, MI. Official relations with church authorities in Romania were severed in 1951; and from 1952 Bishop Valerian D. Trifa headed the church, which is now under jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of North America.
Union and League of Romanian Societies in America, Inc.Records contain minutes, programs of congresses, press releases, reports, and sample documents. Includes English. Inventory available. Circular letters restricted.
Records, 1900-1958. 19.5 linear ft.
The Union and League was established as the result of a merger of early Romanian American fraternal societies. In 1906, the "Vulturul" organization of Homestead, PA, and "Invierea" of Martins Ferry, OH, signed the Consolidation Act of the Union of the Romanian Beneficial and Cultural Societies. In 1928, the Union joined with the League of Romanian Beneficial and Cultural Societies, forming the present-named organization. The Union and League played an important role in development of Romanian American churches, parochial schools, and press.
Return to top.Records of the Union and League include correspondence of the Cleveland, OH, headquarters; minutes and financial books of various branches throughout the United States; and membership registers. Inventory available.
Monographs
The Romanian American monograph collection, totaling ca. 175 volumes, provides substantial coverage for several subject areas: Romanian migration, the Romanian American community as a whole, acculturation, religion, organizations and associations, particular communities, arts and entertainment, and folklore. There are two relatively recent book-length bibliographies on Romanian immigration: Radu Toma's Romanii din America (Romanians of America, 1978, covering emigration to World War II only); and Vladimir Wertsman's The Romanians in America and Canada: A Guide to Information Sources (1980). General works about the Romanians in America include Nicolae Iorga's Scrisori catre Românii din America, 1921-1924 (Writings about Romanians of America, n.d.); Serban Drutzu and Andrei Popovici's Românii în America (The Romanians in America, ca. 1925); Ion Iosif Schiopul's Românii din America (Romanians of America, 1913); and Vladimir Wertsman's The Romanians in America, 1748-1974: A Chronology and Fact Book (1975). Also in the collection are two major books about acculturation of Romanian Americans: Alexandra Roceric's Language Maintenance within an American Ethnic Community: The Case of Romanian (1982), and Kenneth A. Thigpen's Folklore and the Ethnicity Factor in the Lives of Romanian Americans (1973). The collection also includes several histories of Romania.
Particular communities have been the subject of key studies: Christine Avghi Galitzi's A Study of Assimilation Among the Roumanians in the United States (1929, 1968 reprint); Josef J. Barton's Peasants and Strangers: Italians, Rumanians, and Slovaks in an America City, 1890-1950 (1975); and Theodore Andrica's Romanian Americans and their Communities of Cleveland (1977).
On religious groups-the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate in America (ROEA), the Romanian Orthodox Missionary Episcopate of America (ROMEA), the Roman Catholic Church of the Byzantine Rite (Romanian Byzantine Rite), the Romanian Baptist Association of the U.S.A., small groups of Romanian Protestant Pentecostals, and a few independent Orthodox churches--the IHRC holdings include many publications on church music and on Orthodox liturgy, as well as works dealing with the individual denominations. Two histories of the ROEA are present: Vasile Hategan's Fifty Years of the Romanian Orthodox Church in America (1959); and the comprehensive study by Gerald Bobango, The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America: The First Half-Century, 1929-1979 (1979). There is also a general treatment, Dimitrie Gazdaru's Episcopatul Românesc din America (The Romanian Episcopate of America, 1957), along with significant commemorative volumes. On the smaller ROMEA there is its self-published The Romanian Orthodox Missionary Episcopate in America: A Short History (1967). The Romanian Byzantine Rite is described in Golden Jubilee, 1912-1962, published by Most Holy Trinity Catholic Parish (1962).
Fraternal societies are well represented in the collection. The IHRC has the official twenty-five-year and fifty-year histories of the Union and League of Romanian Societies in America: Istoria Uniunei si Ligei Societatilor Române de Ajutor si Cultura din America, 1906-1931 (History of the Union and League of Romanian Societies of Help and Culture in America, 1931) and Istoria Uniunii si Ligii Societatilor Românesti din America (History of the Union and League of Romanian Societies of America), edited by Sofron S. Fekett (1956). The earlier League of Roumanian-American Societies is represented by its constitution (1924).
Romanian American literary publications in the IHRC range from Ilie M. Selisteanul's undated history of America (Istoria Americei, two volumes) to the journal of the philosopher Mircea Eliade (No Souvenirs, 1977). Autobiographical works include Anisoara Stan's They Crossed Mountains and Oceans (1947). Fictional works by C. R. Pascu, Constantin Virgil Negoita, and Dominick Nicol are present, as are poetry by Vasile Posteuca and others and an anthology of verse, Romania Is a Song, edited by Eli Popa (1967). Romanian folklore publications at the IHRC include a book of Romanian folksongs and tunes, issued by the American Romanian Orthodox Youth Association.
