Monographs

The Lithuanian American monograph collection is the largest of the IHRC's Baltic American holdings, numbering ca. 1,250 items.  Both phases of large-scale immigration-the first, which occurred from the late 1860s up to 1920, and the second, which took place after World War II-are clearly reflected; although materials relate more extensively to the post-World War II period.

Bibliographic information on the Lithuanian American immigrant experience can be found in Antanas Kucas's Lithuanians in America (1975), Adam Kantautas's A Lithuanian Bibliography (1975), and Algirdas Budreckis's The Lithuanians in America 1651-1975 (1976).  William Wolkovich-Valkavicius has written an extensive critical overview of sources available in English in "Toward a Historiography of Lithuanian Immigrants to the United States," which appears in the Immigration History Newsletter (November 1983), located in the IHRC reference collection.  Wolkovich-Valkavicius has also written numerous articles, some of which contain bibliographies, for the Lithuanian American journal Lituanus.  A listing that concentrates primarily on the post-World War II period is Jonas Balys's "Lithuanian Bibliographies," part of an article, "Bibliography of Baltic Bibliographies," in Lituanistikos Darbai (Lithuanian Studies, Vol. 2, 1969); supplements to it appear in Naujoji Viltis (New Hope; No. 2, 1971, and No. 4, 1972).  A major source of information on Lithuanian Americans is the six-volume Encyclopaedia Lituanica (Lithuanian Encyclopedia), of which the IHRC has the first volume.

The monograph collection contains several key general histories of Lithuanians in America.  These include J. R. Jonas's Lietuviai Amerikoj (Lithuanians in America, 1899); Kazys Gineitis's Amerika ir Amerikos Lietuviai (America and American Lithuanians, 1925); Anastas Miliukas's Amerikos Lietuviai XIX; Simtmetyje, 1868-1900 (American Lithuanians in the Nineteenth Century, 1938); and Antanas Kucas's Lithuanians in America (1975).  The collection also contains the Budreckis chronology, The Lithuanians in America 1651-1975, and Joseph Roucek's American Lithuanians (1940).  All of these works, to varying degree, describe patterns of Lithuanian American migration, settlement, organizational life, and acculturation.  Other similar analyses of the early period can be found in the journal Lituanus.

The collection is very strong on histories of specific Lithuanian American communities.  Vladas Butenas examines Pennsylvania communities in Pennsylvanijos Angliakasiu Lietuva (Lithuania of the Pennsylvania Miners, 1977).  Chicago is substantially dealt with in David Fainhauz's Lithuanians in Multi-Ethnic Chicago (1977) as well as Aleksas Ambrose's Chicagos Lietuviu Istorija 1869-1959 (The History of Lithuanians in Chicago, 1967).  Other histories that deal with Lithuanian centers of settlement include John Cadzow's Lithuanian Americans and Their Communities of Cleveland (1978); Jeronimas Cicenas's Omahos Lietuviai (The Lithuanians of Omaha, 1955); and Wolkovich-Valkavicius's From the Nemunas to the Assabet; A History of the Lithuanians and Lithuanian Americans of Hudson, Massachusetts (1966).

The history of the early Lithuanian Americans emerges to a large extent from immigrant biographies and autobiographies, published materials relating to organizational activities, and the extensive output of the Lithuanian American press.  Reflections on early community life may be found in Vincas Ambroze's Autobiografija. Vincas Ambrozevicius (75 metu sukakciai) (Autobiography of Vincas Ambrozevicius [Up to the Age of Seventy-five], 1942); Vytautas Sirvydas's Juozas O. Sirvydas, 1875-1931 (1941); and Aréjas Vitkauskas's An Immigrant's Story (1956).  Wolkovich-Valkavicius's Lithuanian Pioneer Priest of New England (1980) describes religious life and the ideological schisms in the community.  Dissension within the immigrant community is also dealt with in Victor Greene's For God and Country: The Rise of Polish and Lithuanian Ethnic Consciousness in America (1975).

The nationalist-clericalist struggle is documented in publications of the Lithuanian Alliance of America, which range from Susivienijimo Lietuviu Amerikoje Istorija. Nuo 1886 iki 1951 metu (The History of the Lithuanian Alliance in America, 1916) to numerous jubilee histories.  Also found in the monograph collection are the Alliance's organizational materials, such as copies of the constitution and bylaws printed in both Lithuanian and English.  There is comparatively little on the Lithuanian Roman Catholic Alliance of America, other than Antanas Kucas's Lietuviu Romos Kataliku susivienijimas Amerikoje (Alliance of the Lithuanian Roman Catholics in America, 1956) and articles that appear in church parish jubilee albums.  These albums and histories, however, constitute a rich resource on Lithuanian Roman Catholic parishes throughout the country.  Representative of these are Antanas Kucas's The History of St. Peter's Lithuanian Parish, South Boston (1956) and Povilas Abelkis's Visu sventuju parapija Roselande 1906-1956 (All Saints Parish of Roseland, 1956), a history of Chicago's All Saints Parish.  The collection also includes numerous theological works published by Lithuanian American religious publishing houses.

The extensive publishing activity of Lithuanian Americans is documented in Frank Lavinskas's Amerikos Lietuviu Laikrasciai 1879-1955 (The Lithuanian Press in the United States, 1955).  Descriptions in English of the Lithuanian American press are found in Balys's "The American Lithuanian Press" in Lituanus (Spring, 1976) and M. G. Slavenas's "Lithuanian Ethnic Press" in The Ethnic Press in the United States, edited by Sally Miller (1987), located in the IHRC general collection.  The Lithuanian American monograph collection also has a number of self-education guides and books published by the various publishing houses for the immigrants.  These include textbooks for learning English such as Joseph Laukis's Rankvedis angliskos kalbos (English Phrase Book, 1906) and S. Tananevicz's Vienatinis savo rusies lietuviskai-angliskos kalbos rankvedis (A Unique Lithuanian-English Phrase Book, 1912); self-help books like Jonas Kaskiaucius's Darbininko sveikata (Worker's Health, 1925) on health and hygiene; popularizations of the sciences and humanities such as Juozas Adomaitis's Geografija arba zemes apraszymas (Geography or a Description of the Earth, 1906) and John Szlupas's Lietuviu prateviai Mazojoje Aziojaje (Lithuanian Forefathers in Asia Minor, 1915); and translations of popular fiction as well as classics from world literature.

Also well represented are books of a political and ideological nature such as translations of works by Marx, Lenin, Gorky, and Kautsky.  All of these were published by Laisve, the Socialist and, later, Communist newspaper.  There are also numerous books and pamphlets by the labor activist, journalist, and writer, Anthony Bimba.  These include works like his Istorija klasiu kovos Amerikoje (The History of Class Struggle in America, 1925) and Religija ir piktadarystes (Religion and Evil, 1925).  Bimba's 1926 sedition trial is documented in Wolkovich-Valkavicius's Bay State "Blue" Laws and Bimba (1973).  In addition, the IHRC holds Bimba's personal reading library, along with a copy of his autobiography.

Among the creative writings of Lithuanian Americans is poetry by immigrant writers, like Kazimieras Urbonaivicius's Jono Kmito eiles (Verses of John Kmitas, 1921).  The collection also contains a rich assortment of Lithuanian American plays, among them M. Grigonis's Linksmos dienos (Happy Days, 1913), K. S. Karpavicius's Juozapas ir Zelbora ir paraono sapnas (Joseph and Zelbora and the Pharaoh's Dream, 1923), and J. Steponaitis's Uz Vilniu! (For Vilnius! 1934).  The history of Lithuanian American dramatic activity appears in Bronius Vaskelis's "Lithuanian American Theatre" in Ethnic Theatre in the United States, edited by Maxine Seller (1983), and Alfreds Straumanis's Baltic Drama: A Handbook and Bibliography (1981), both located in the IHRC general collection.

Books such as Lithuania and World War II (1947) and Lithuania, Country and Nation (1946) reflect historical, political, and sociocultural events in Lithuania before, during, and following World War II and are among the large number of works produced by refugees who fled their homeland.  Many of these were published in the displaced persons camps of Germany.  The DP experience itself is represented in accounts like Juozas Pasilaitis's Hearken, Then Judge; Sidelights on Lithuanian DPs (1949?) and in refugee autobiographies such as Barbara Armonas's Leave Your Tears in Moscow (n.d.).  Publications from this time period deal heavily with Lithuanian history, language, and literature.  These are typified by works such as Pranas Cepenas's Naujuju laiku Lietuvos istorija (History of Lithuania in Modern Times, 1947); Alfred Senn's The Lithuanian Language, a Characterization (1942); and Vaclovas Biriiska's Lietuviu rasytoju kalendorius (Calendar of Lithuanian Writers, 1946).  In particular, the many aspects of folk culture are dealt with in numerous books, among them Balys's Lietuviu dainos Amerikoje (Lithuanian Folk Songs in America, 1958 and 1977) and The First Marian Reader; Folktales, Legends, and Short Stories (1951).  The collection is especially strong in poetry written by Lithuanian émigré poets throughout the world.  Most of it appears in Lithuanian, although some has been translated; for example, Frank Yakstis's Translation of Lithuanian Poetry (1968).

An abundance of materials reflect the histories of émigré organizations.  Lietuviu Veteranu Sajungos Ramoves pirmas desimtmetis, 1950-1960 (The First Decade of the Lithuanian Veterans' Association "Ramove"), for example, outlines the history of the Lithuanian Veterans Organization; Leonardas Simutis's Amerikos Lietuviu Taryba; 30 metu Lietuvos Laisves kovoje, 1940-1970 (Lithuanian American Council; Thirty Year Struggle for Lithuanian Independence, 1970) describes the history of the Lithuanian American Council.  The role of Lithuanian women in organizational activity is examined in The Lithuanian Woman (1968), a history of the Federation of Lithuanian Women's Clubs, edited by Biruté Novickis.
