Profile
The Italian American Collection at the IHRC constitutes the most extensive body of original source material in the country for the study of Italian immigration and ethnicity.
Included are over 1,500 books and pamphlets, most of which are imprints of Italian American publishers. These take the form of autobiographies, biographies, community histories, novels, poetry, and polemical works of a religious and political nature.
In addition, there are approximately 450 titles of newspapers and periodicals published throughout the U.S. and reflecting the entire spectrum of Italian American opinion and ideologies; in many cases, the IHRC maintains the only extant holdings of a title. Several of the Center's newspapers have been preserved on microfilm and are available for purchase or through interlibrary loan.
Along with these printed materials, the Center holds over 1,200 linear feet of manuscript collections comprising the personal papers of clergymen, journalists, politicians, labor leaders, and writers and the records of cultural, labor, religious, and political organizations.
The largest component is the archives of the Order Sons of Italy in America which document the activities of the leading Italian American fraternal organization at the national, state, and local levels. Also, substantial amounts of archival records from Italy are available on microfilm, including material from the Historical Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Rome).
Taken together, the collection touches upon virtually every facet of the Italian experience in America and is particularly rich in sources on organizational, political, and labor activities.
