Monographs
The Center's Hungarian American monograph collection includes approximately 760 volumes. Its strengths lie in the areas of religion, literature, and material on refugees of World War II and the 1956 Hungarian revolution. In addition to the bibliography by Joseph Széplaki based on the Center's own collection, Hungarians in the United States and Canada: A Bibliography (1977), the IHRC has several other general and specialized Szeplaki bibliographies. For example, The Hungarians in America 1583-1974: A Chronology and Fact Book (1975) includes important dates and documents relating to the Hungarian experience in America as well as bibliographical references. Also available is an annotated bibliography by Ilona Kovács, The Hungarians in the United States (MLS thesis, Kent State University, 1975) as well as the article "Historical, Literary, Linguistic, and Ethnographic Research on Hungarian Americans" by Steven B. Várdy and A. Huszár Várdy in the journal Hungarian Studies (1985).
Historical works on Hungarian Americans include Emil Lengyel's Americans from Hungary (1948), still considered an important account of pre-World War II Hungarian immigration. Another general work is László Könnyü's Hungarians in the United States: An Immigration Study (1967). The experience of the large numbers of Hungarians who immigrated after the 1956 revolution in Hungary is examined by S. Alexander Weinstock in Acculturation and Occupation: A Study of the 1956 Hungarian Refugees in the United States (1969). A more recent contribution to the field is S. B. Várdy's The Hungarian-Americans (1985). In addition, Joshua Fishman's Hungarian Language Maintenance in the United States (1966) focuses on the social psychology of language retention. Sociologist John Kósa explores immigrant kinship systems among Hungarian Canadians in Land of Choice: The Hungarians in Canada (1957).
Much of the significant scholarship in Hungarian American studies is in the form of unpublished doctoral dissertations. The Center holds more than twenty of these, on such topics as religious and cultural organizations, acculturation, and specific Hungarian communities in the United States. Joseph Széplaki's Doctoral Dissertations Related to Hungary (1974), is a useful guide.
The Center's collection of works on religion includes histories and commemorative publications for more than a hundred Hungarian American churches of various denominations, as well as scholarly books and dissertations. An example of the latter is Aladár Komjáthy's dissertation, The Hungarian Reformed Church in America: An Effort to Preserve a Denominational Heritage (1962).
Scholars in Hungary have contributed significantly to the body of research on the Hungarian experience in America. This scholarship has essentially been concerned with economic, social, and demographic aspects of emigration. The Center's collection includes two recent works in Hungarian, Miklós Szántó's Magyarok Amerikaban (Hungarians in America, 1984) and Julianna Puskás's Kivandorlo magyarok az Egyesült Államokban 1880-1940 (Hungarian Emigrants in the United States, 1982), a comparative analysis of emigration and the development of Hungarian settlements in America. The Center also has the condensed and translated version of Puskás's work, From Hungary to the United States, 1880-1914 (1982). A recent compilation of Hungarian documentation is the two-volume "Valahol túl, meseországban . . ." Az amerikás magyarok 1895-1920 ("Somewhere in a Distant Fabled Land . . ." American Hungarians 1895-1920), edited by Albert Tezla (1987).
The IHRC's collection of Hungarian American literature is extensive, containing the works of Erzsébet Kisjókai, György Kemény, László Könnyü, László Szabó, Albert Wass, and many others. Hungarian Canadian authors are also well represented. In writings about Hungarian American literature and writers, László Könnyü's History of American Hungarian Literature: Presentation of American Hungarian Authors of the Last 100 Years and Selections from Their Writings (1962) focuses primarily on Hungarian language publications, and includes biographical sketches. Also useful is Enikö Molnár Basa's chapter on Hungarian American literature in Ethnic Perspectives in American Literature: Selected Essays on the European Contribution, edited by Robert J. Di Pietro and Edward Ifkovic (1983), found in the IHRC's general collection.
