Profile

The Greek American Collection at the IHRC contains a variety of archival and published material documenting Greek settlement and activity throughout the United States.

The cornerstone of this collection is the extensive body of personal and professional papers compiled by the leading historian of Greek immigration, Theodore Saloutos. Included in the 33 linear feet of manuscript material are Saloutos' correspondence, speeches, dairies, research notes, interviews, and source files pertaining to numerous Greek American communities and subjects.

The Saloutos collection, which is described in detail in a published guide, is complemented by other archival sources from individuals, including journalists Kostis Argoe and Demetrios Callimachos, and organizations such as Minnesotans for Democracy in Greece, the Order of AHEPA, the Department of the Laity of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America. Also available, on microfilm, are records of the U.S. Department of State, 1910-29, dealing with political relations between the United States and Greece (from original documents at the National Archives).

In addition to these records and papers, the IHRC holds over 400 books and pamphlets written by, for and about Greek Americans; many of these came to the Center from Professor Saloutos' personal library.

Newspapers and serials, too, constitute a major component of the IHRC's Greek American holdings. In all, approximately 150 periodical titles are represented, emanating from various parts of North America and reflecting a range of Greek American perspectives and interests.

Help develop and ensure the future of IHRC collections!

Monographs

The recent addition of historian Theodore Saloutos's personal library to the IHRC augmented holdings already strong in the area of religion and created new areas of strength in general works; Greek emigration policy and the background to the migration, and Greek American organizations, political activities, geographical distribution, ethnic press, and literature.  Topics such as assimilation, education, and the family are represented to a lesser degree.

Among the IHRC books are the key secondary works about Greek Americans (including bibliographies), as well as a variety of directories, biographies, and guides.  Available overviews, in addition to Saloutos's They Remember America (1956) and Greeks in the United States (1964), include Henry Pratt Fairchild's Greek Immigration to the United States (1911); Thomas Burgess's Greeks in America (1913); Andreas M. Andreadis's He Hellenike metanasteusis (The Greek Migration, 1917); Seraphim G. Canoutas's Ho Hellenismos en Amerike (Hellenism in America, 1918); J. P. Xenides's The Greeks in America (1922); The Greek American Community in Transition, edited by Harry J. Psomiades and Alice Scourby (1982); Charles Moskos's Greek Americans: Struggle and Success (1980); and others.  Also present are the two extant bibliographies: Michael Cutsumbis's Bibliographic Guide to Materials on Greeks in the U.S., 1890-1968 (1970) and Evangelos Vlachos's Annotated Bibliography of Greek Migration (1966).

The IHRC has biographies and autobiographies of such figures as Michael Anagnos and Spyros Skouras, among others; these supplement directories of Greek Americans in higher learning (1974) and in business (1979).  Primary sources from the early twentieth century include publications intended for newly arrived Greek immigrants such as guides, advice manuals, and primers of English.

On the subject of religion, most items are publications of the Orthodox Christian Educational Society or the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America and its parishes.  Publication dates range from the 1910s to the present, with the period since World War II having fullest coverage.  Among the archdiocesan publications are bylaws, catechisms, and liturgies; ecumenical guidelines and discussions (1960s); a 1955-1956 catalog of the Holy Cross Theological School in Brookline, Massachusetts; and yearbooks, anniversary albums, and commemorative albums (such as those marking national assemblies).  Also present are publications of the Greek Orthodox Youth Association (GOYA).  A number of pamphlets published by the Church or by others pertain to controversies of the 1940s through the 1970s; among these works by John Papas, Constantine Dukakis, Demetrios Callimachos, and others are discussions of Holy Cross Seminary.  Numerous other religious sources highlight particular localities, as for example the fiftieth anniversary album of a San Diego church community (1977).  Also included are secondary studies, such as a biography of Patriarch Athenagoras I by George Papaioannou (1976) and a history by Nicon D. Patrinacos, The Aims and Program of Archdiocesan Education (1976).

The migration of Greeks to the United States is treated at length in the general works listed above.  Questions of emigration and emigration policy are the subjects of Greek works dating from the pre-World War I period and later.  Some aspects of the background to the post-World War II migration are reflected in studies by Irwin Sanders (Village Social Organization in Greece, 1953) and Scott McNall (The Greek Peasant, 1974) describing peasant life in the modern Greek village.

Greek immigrants, like others, formed numerous fraternal organizations, mutual benefit societies, and relief societies, often established by people from the same original village or region.  The IHRC has commemorative albums of mutual benefit societies of former Samians (1923), Arahovans of Laconia (1950), Lacedaemonians (1952), Thracians (1962), and Arcadians (1956 and 1964), among others.  In addition there are primary materials from two broad Greek American organizations: the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) and the Greek American Progressive Association (GAPA).   Order of AHEPA publications among the IHRC holdings include a history by its long-time executive secretary George Leber (1972) as well as extensive primary sources documenting the organization and its auxiliaries.  At the national level there are books by AHEPA leaders V. I. Chebithes and George C. Vournas as well as manuals (including manuals of bylaws), yearbooks, and an annual report (1976).  Commemorative publications comprise anniversary albums and convention publications (albums, summaries of minutes, and informational publications about the Greek heritage and prominent individuals).  Publications of AHEPA auxiliary organizations are also present: from the Daughters of Penelope, the senior women's auxiliary, there is a fiftieth anniversary album (1979), and from the Sons of Pericles, the junior men's auxiliary, there is a manual containing its constitution and bylaws (1926).  Sources at the IHRC relating to GAPA extend to publications of individual GAPA lodges as well as annual national convention albums (1930 and 1931) and an undated manual supplying texts of a constitution and bylaws for women's lodges.

In the area of politics the IHRC holdings contain assorted primary sources on Greek American involvement in foreign and domestic political issues.  Many are publications issued by organizations.  These include pamphlets of the Pan-Epirotic Union in America (1919) and of the Dodecanesian League of America (1942).  The Panhellenic Union, influential in the recruitment of immigrants for Greece during the Balkan wars of 1912-1913, is represented by a yearbook from 1920.  From a later period there are publications of organizations concerned with the Cyprus issue (1960s-present).  In the 1970s, domestic concerns are evident in a publication by HANAC (Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee, Inc.), The Needs of the Growing Greek-American Community in the City of New York.

Most arriving Greeks settled in the cities of the northeastern and north-central states.  The IHRC has wide-ranging primary sources in the form of local communities' commemorative albums marking fiftieth anniversaries (Astoria, NY [1977]; central Ohio [1962]; and Baltimore [1946]) and other events (Brooklyn [1920], Chicago [1937 and 1982], and Atlanta [1975]).  Regional professional directories for the western states (n.d.) and Illinois (1975) are also present.  Many secondary works at the IHRC treat the Greek American history of a selected city, greater urban area, county, or state.  States discussed wholly or in part include California (Demitra Georgas's Greek Settlement of the San Francisco Bay Area, 1974), Florida (Helen Halley's A Historical Functional Approach to the Study of the Greek Community of Tarpon Springs, 1952), Massachusetts (George T. Eliopoulos's Greek Immigrants in Springfield, Massachusetts, 1884-1944, 1967), Minnesota (Karen Anne Bruce's The Social Organization of the Greek Community in Minneapolis, 1961), Ohio (Angelos Nikolaou Alexopoulos's The Greek Story of Canton, Ohio, 1898-1973, 1974), Texas (The Greek Texans by the Institute of Texan Cultures, 1974), and Utah (Helen Papanikolas's Toil and Rage in a New Land: The Greek Immigrants in Utah, 1970).

On the subject of the Greek American press, the royalist Atlantis (1894-1973) is represented by such publications as a poetry anthology.  Regarding the rival Ethnikos Keryx (National Herald), the IHRC holds publications such as yearbooks from the 1920s and 1930s and a National Herald book catalog (Genikos timokatalogos [General Price Catalog], 1930).

From among the arts the IHRC holdings feature literary works written by Greek Americans or dealing with Greek themes.  The collection includes novels by Tiffany Thayer, Konstantinos P. Rhodokanakes, Albert Isaac Bezzarides, Mary Vardoulakis, Roxane Cotsakis, Warren Tute, Harry Mark Petrakis, and Elia Kazan.  Poetry is present by Anesti I. Ganotaki and by George B. Donus.

Greek American educational materials at the IHRC reflect that community's emphasis on the use of Greek parochial schools to replace or supplement public schooling.  A major secondary study is Andrew Kopan's dissertation Education and Greek Immigrants in Chicago, 1892-1973: A Study in Ethnic Survival (1974).  The broad range of primary sources available includes, among others, an instructional manual for teachers in Church schools (Georgios Alexandros's Hodegos tou didaskontos prosopikou ton Hellenikon Katekhetikon Scholeion [Guide for the Teaching Staff in Greek Sunday Schools], 1930), a Greek-language anthology for Greek American girls (Mene Dimitriou's Prote Helleno-Amerikanike paidike anthologia dia ta Hellenopoula tes Amerikes [First Greek-American Children's Anthology for the Greek Children of America], 1935), Greek language primers for Greek American children (E. Wesander's Modern Greek Reader, 1943), and a dedication album for the Hellenic-American School in Lowell, MA (1959).

The assimilation or acculturation of Greek Americans is the subject of several volumes available at the IHRC.  These include The Social Adjustment of the Greeks in Spartanburg, South Carolina, by Rosamonde Ramsey Boyd (1948); a compilation of sociological surveys of Greeks abroad, Enquêtes sociologiques sur les émigrants grecs (Sociological Research on the Greek Emigrants), by Elias Demetras (1971); and a dissertation, Upward Mobility, Assimilation, and the Achievements of the Greeks in the United States with Special Emphasis on Boston and Philadelphia, by Dimitrios Ioannis Monos (1972).  Studies are also present dealing specifically with language assimilation (Gregorios D. Androutsopoulos's Skepseis Tines peri diatereseos tou Hellenismou tes Amerikes [Thoughts on the Preservation of Hellenism in America], 1955) or retention (Paul D. Seaman's Modern Greek and American English in Contact, 1972).
