I received your letter but in vain because nothing in it makes me happy and in vain when I am calling and you won't come home to be sorry for me [unusual use of žališ , added MD] as one feels for a mother and returns home [prompted by this feeling, added MD] I am alive but my health is in bad shape but you do not feel for me as those who would who do not have a place to return to and they do not have their own home [ budak is more like a small fort or at least used in reference to building, need to look up in the dictionary of Turkish loan words in Croatian for a more precise meaning, added MD] but you don't wish to have this feeling and my own mother got ill so I am going to have her buried in the black soil even if to my own if I were to go to America truths to hear from other people who are coming back [this part of the idiom has multiple referents and antecedents, needs some more thinking, MD]

That they need to leave immediately because life is better there [she thinks in America, I believe, added MD] but here you can eat only you need to work I can tell you that grandmother died and buried on St. Peter's and I can tell you if you have not heard from our kuma [ kuma is a kinship relation usually godmother, which is not by blood, something like “aunt” in a general sense, added MD] and I can tell you if you have not heard of kuma Joka's great sorrow that Đurica got killed on St. Peter's [holiday, added MD] who killed him is not known because it was during the night and in his drunkenness and he was found dead in front of the cashier's place and his wife with him everyone resents her even if she were not able to save him [meaning of sbrat not clear, added MD] she could have seen someone when she was carousing at her time [I understood she was with him and also drinking, added MD]

[new page]

And then she ran away and uncle asked you to again ask about his boy whether he is alive somewhere and I ask you many times [intensifier with ask may mean, added MD] and to drink a glass of wine for health [is she asking him not to drink too much but just a glass so that he does not become a drunk – it would appear that all associations are leading to this moral, added MD] and I don't know what you are doing and if you have some accident that would be even larger illness for me and it is nothing now what I am sick and ask you to come home and if you do not have money saved with which you could return home and to do what you cannot do and tell me I will come home spending all [text not clear here, added MD] live or die I will go home and if you have such wish I will borrow and will send you [money, added MD] for that expense

And I ask you engage with [ ljuduj here means socialize, engage in interpersonal relationships cautiously or in a particular way, added MD] people when even brothers by blood do not give each their honest word [uses the same idiom to connect two thoughts, a shortcut use of svakomu rijec poštenu , added MD] give to everyone your honest word and all will give their word too and now nothing more but I greet you and execute these wishes as soon as you get this letter immediately write
