National History Day

History Day in Minnesota -- Spring 2008.

History Day is a program that invites young people to explore a historical subject related to an annual theme. The 2008 National History Day theme is Conflict and Compromise in History. History Day makes the themes broad enough to allow students to be able to explore any topic in any era of history.

The History Day program encourages the study of history to students. By allowing the students to explore all types of topics, incorporating creativity and scholarship, History Day has enriched the social studies program in Minnesota.

Students in grades 6-12 may participate in the fair. Students compete in different categories, and their work is reviewed by historians, educators and professionals. The top students in each category are eligible to participate in the National History Day competition in June.

Regional competition begins in March. Information can be found at Minnesota Regional History Days for dates and locations.

The Minnesota Historical Society and the Department of History at the University of Minnesota sponsor National History Day in Minnesota. The History Day in Minnesota web site also lists other major supporters.
